Amethyst - purple and red pendant

Bespoke: Purple and Red Pendant

A lovely couple visited my stall at the Summer Craft Show on 29 July. They had seen my picture in a Stamford Mercury article about a previous Stamford Artisans Guild show and thought I could make something unique to match the Mother of the Bride dress. It had to be a bold statement piece!

The dress is purple with hints of red on it. They didn’t bring the dress, but did bring two feathers as colour samples. At the fair I took all the details so I could think about it a little more and come up with some ideas on what stone to use.

Purple immediately shouts Amethyst but dark purple amethyst is not always readily available. We have lots of Chevron Amethyst but I didn’t think we had dark purple chunks without any white.

Mr. A spent some time looking through our rough stock and found pieces that he could get a big chunk of purple from. It has resulted in some light purple slabs but I am sure we will do something with that later. He made two cabs and we sent pictures to the customer for approval.

Then I had to think of ways to wrap it in Gold Filled Wire in a simple style to show off as much of the stone as possible but also add a hint of red… The customer looked at items listed on my website and particularly like the Rutilated Quartz Pendant so she wanted the stone wrapped in a similar style. Yes I can do that, but the Rutilated Quartz Cab is quite small and this cabochon is BIG.

Anyway… this is what I made.

Amethyst & wire Pendant with a single red coral bead. The wire is 1mm Gold Fill Soft.

Pictures were emailed and met with approval. I handed over the pendant a couple of weeks ago and this morning got this lovely message:

Dear Shalini,

Just a note to say thank you, once again, for making me the lovely amethyst pendant. It was very much admired at our daughter’s wedding last week. Everyone was asking where I had bought it from, as it matched my dress so perfectly!!

Many thanks and I’ll know where to go if I need another something special.

Best wishes – Jo

And THAT is why I love what I do!
