September is here and a busy period of making begins. I have several craft shows, artist markets and an exhibition coming up. So I will try and share some photos from the workbench, which is going to be a real hive of activity I am sure :-) To stay updated about events I am part of please do check my Events and Shows page...
I have several Copper Trinket Trays offered for sale in my online shop. Some are in stock and some are made to order. I always get very excited when a "made to order" email drops into my inbox because it means I can once again take a blank sheet of copper and create a new piece.Read More: Making a Copper TrayRead More: Making a Copper Tray..
Copper leaves on my mind... lots of leaves, different shapes, different techniques, so many ideas... I am thinking of new designs for the forthcoming ESC Artists exhibition at Stamford Arts Centre and these leaves are going to play a big part in at least 3 pieces I am creating. Maybe more than three but I am aiming for minimum three pieces. Copper leaves are fun to make and I have been using them a lot in my work in jewellery, tea-light holders and as decorative sculptures. They look quite realistic and take patina so well and look quite autumnal after flame painting. Some of the l..
Fold Forming is a metalwork technique which involves annealing and folding sheet metal before adding texture to create amazing patterns and 3D shapes. It gives a lot of structure and dimension to metal and is an excellent way to create one off pieces of jewellery and decorative items. I have been playing with this technique a lot and created several Leaf Shapes for jewellery and sculptures. I have also been using fold forming to make one-off cuff bracelets in copper which have proved popular at craft shows and at Art in the Heart Gallery where I have a small selection for sale. ..
At the ESC Artists Market in Stamford last month I met a lovely lady who loves jewellery. She asked if I could make her a close fitting thin copper necklace that she could hang her favourite pendant from. She was very specific on size so I measured her neck with a piece of string to make sure I did not make any mistakes. I cut 2mm bare copper wire to size, beaded the ends using my torch, hammered it on the necklace mandrel and gave it a good shine. I am delighted to say she loves it and it is exactly the size she wanted. Now she has asked me to make a rigid copper anklet..
The next design on my coppersmithing projects list is Round Copper Bowls. They are probably going to be roundish but that's OK, because each one will be unique. I watched a few expert metalsmiths, who have kindly shared videos on YouTube, and took inspiration and tips to try and create my own pieces. This is the first attempt. I cut an 11 cm diameter disc from .5mm copper sheet and annealed it. Then I folded over the ends. Then LOTS of hammering happened and I created this. Finished with a liver of sulphur patina. I am very pleased with this piece and will have a coup..
Currently working on a range of textured copper coasters. I have made two designs so far and I am very pleased with how they have turned out :-) A few more being sketched for texturing and possibly some etching too. It is a lot of fun and I am thinking of doing a "Live Art Saturday" session at Art in the Heart demonstrating the making of my new range of home-ware. ..
I am very pleased with my first batch of recycled copper pipe cuff bracelets :-) Some are available to buy online and some are at Art in the Heart Bespoke orders welcome in the size you want. The most popular size for cuff bracelets in this style is 6 - 6.5 inches but I can make them larger or smaller. As with any hand-crafted design each piece will have its individual look depending on the way the hammer hits the metal. ..
I have been having more fun with copper sheet creating lots of little trays, dishes and ashtrays using 0.5 mm copper sheet, texturing hammers and my trusty Sievert Pro 86 Jewellers Gas Blow Torch. Each piece is individually forged and a one-off. Some of these designs are going to Art in the Heart, Peterborough and some are available to buy or made to order via my online shop. ..
